Medical Informatics is "the science underlying the acquisition, maintenance, retrieval, and application of biomedical knowledge and information to improve patient care, medical education, and health sciences research."
Charles P. Friedman, PhD 1998

Practically speaking, the mission of medical informatics and telemedicine - sometimes referred to as telematics - is to "help people use information to improve health."
William W. Stead 1999

The Medical Informatics and Telemedicine (MI & T) program participates in multiple clinical information system initiatives that impact the quality and timeliness of care for patients seen in the State public hospital system, the LSUHSC Juvenile Justice Program and community clinics serving the under/uninsured in the New Orleans metropolitan area. The program supports spoke and hub videoconferencing sites across Louisiana, enabling delivery of clinical, educational and administrative content to patients and healthcare professionals at multiple state agencies and rural locations.
